What this example does well

  • The summary ends with a measured result, which many analyst resumes never reach.
  • Rework rate on user stories is a clever proof of quality that developers and managers both understand.
  • The industry is named, and domain knowledge is a big part of an analyst's value.

How do you write a summary for a business analyst resume?

Two to four lines at the top that say what you do, for how long, and what you are best at. Here is one for each stage of a career.

  • Entry level

Information systems graduate with an internship on a banking change team, where I documented processes, took notes in requirement workshops and wrote test cases. Comfortable with SQL and Excel and good at asking the second question.

  • Experienced

Business analyst with four years of experience in financial services. Gathers and writes requirements, maps processes, supports testing and measures results after launch.

  • Senior

Lead business analyst with twelve years of experience across insurance and healthcare. Leads a team of five analysts, shapes programs worth $20 million before they start and is trusted by executives to say when a project should not go ahead.

How to write a resume summary, with more examples

What are good bullet points for a business analyst resume?

Each starts with a verb and says what was done. Change the details and numbers to your own; a number you cannot explain in an interview is worse than none.

  1. Gathered requirements through interviews and workshops with 40 stakeholders.

  2. Wrote user stories with clear acceptance criteria for a team of eight developers.

  3. Mapped current and future processes in BPMN and found five steps that could be removed.

  4. Analyzed data in SQL to size the problem before the project was approved.

  5. Built a business case that secured $1.2 million in funding.

  6. Planned and ran user acceptance testing with business users.

  7. Kept a traceability matrix linking every requirement to its test.

  8. Translated technical constraints into plain language for business teams.

  9. Measured results after launch and reported them to the sponsor.

  10. Wrote training guides and ran sessions for 150 users before go-live.

Which skills should a business analyst put on a resume?

Pick the ones the job posting asks for and that you can back up with an example from your work.

Hard skills

  • Requirements elicitation and documentation
  • Process modeling (BPMN, flowcharts)
  • User stories and acceptance criteria
  • Data analysis (SQL, Excel)
  • Reporting (Power BI, Tableau)
  • User acceptance testing
  • Business cases and cost-benefit analysis
  • Tools (Jira, Confluence, Visio)

Soft skills

  • Active listening
  • Facilitation
  • Clear writing
  • Critical thinking
  • Diplomacy

Licenses and certifications

  • Entry Certificate in Business Analysis (ECBA)
  • Certification of Capability in Business Analysis (CCBA)
  • Certified Business Analysis Professional (CBAP)
  • PMI Professional in Business Analysis (PMI-PBA)

Which keywords belong on a business analyst resume?

The words recruiters and applicant tracking systems search for.

  • requirements
  • user stories
  • acceptance criteria
  • workshops
  • processes
  • SQL
  • Power BI
  • user acceptance testing
  • BPMN

Use the ones that are true for you, written the way the posting writes them, and put each where it shows something you did. A list of keywords with nothing behind it helps nobody. To keep them readable by software, choose an ATS-friendly template, and read how applicant tracking systems read a resume.

How do you show the value of analysis work?

Follow the work to its end. Requirements lead to a change, and the change has an effect: hours saved, errors reduced, sales enabled, a cost avoided. Name that effect even if others built the solution.

Quality measures help too. Stories that passed testing without rework, or defects traced back to missing requirements, show how good your writing was.

Which tools should a business analyst list?

The ones for each part of the job: a modeling tool for processes, a tracker for stories, a query language and a reporting tool for data. Jira, Confluence, Visio, SQL and Power BI or Tableau cover most postings.

If you know the business system itself, such as Guidewire, Salesforce or SAP, add it. Domain systems are often what gets you shortlisted.

What do employers look for in a business resume?

  • Give the scale of what you handled: budget, team size, number of sites, how many executives you supported.
  • Write about outcomes other people felt. A project delivered three weeks early or a process that went from five days to one is easy to picture.
  • Name the software you use every day. Many postings for these roles filter on it.
