Data Analyst Resume Example

Also called Business Intelligence Analyst, Reporting Analyst, BI Analyst.

A data analyst is hired to help people decide. Tools matter, but the strongest resumes show a question, the analysis and the decision that followed, with SQL and dashboards as the means.

What this example does well

  • The first bullet tells a whole story: the question, the method and the money it protected.
  • Dashboards are described by who uses them and how often, which shows they were worth building.
  • The A/B testing bullet mentions what a result does not show, a sign of an analyst people can trust.

How do you write a summary for a data analyst resume?

Two to four lines at the top that say what you do, for how long, and what you are best at. Here is one for each stage of a career.

  • Entry level

Statistics graduate with an internship in a marketing analytics team, where I wrote SQL queries and built a Tableau dashboard still used by the team. Completed a capstone analyzing 2 million taxi trips in Python. Careful with numbers and clear when presenting them.

  • Experienced

Data analyst with four years of experience turning business questions into SQL, dashboards and recommendations. Works in Python and Tableau, runs A/B test analysis and explains results to people who do not read code.

  • Senior

Senior data analyst with nine years of experience in e-commerce and finance. Leads analytics for a business unit with $200 million in revenue, mentors four analysts and is the person executives ask when two reports disagree.

How to write a resume summary, with more examples

What are good bullet points for a data analyst resume?

Each starts with a verb and says what was done. Change the details and numbers to your own; a number you cannot explain in an interview is worse than none.

  1. Wrote SQL queries across a 400-table warehouse to answer questions from sales, product and finance.

  2. Built Tableau dashboards used by 50 managers, replacing a weekly slide deck.

  3. Found the cause of a drop in repeat purchases using cohort analysis, leading to a change in the loyalty program.

  4. Analyzed A/B tests, including sample size, significance and a plain-language summary.

  5. Automated recurring reports in Python, saving ten hours a week.

  6. Defined standard metrics with finance so that every team reported revenue the same way.

  7. Cleaned and joined data from the CRM, billing system and web analytics.

  8. Forecast monthly demand with a seasonal model accurate to within 6%.

  9. Presented findings to directors with one chart per point and a clear recommendation.

  10. Documented data sources and definitions in a shared catalog.

Which skills should a data analyst put on a resume?

Pick the ones the job posting asks for and that you can back up with an example from your work.

Hard skills

  • SQL
  • Python or R
  • Dashboards (Tableau, Power BI, Looker)
  • Spreadsheets
  • Statistics and A/B testing
  • Data modeling (dbt)
  • Cloud warehouses (Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift)
  • Data cleaning
  • Forecasting

Soft skills

  • Asking the right question
  • Explaining numbers simply
  • Skepticism
  • Attention to detail
  • Working with stakeholders

Licenses and certifications

  • Google Data Analytics Certificate
  • Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate
  • Tableau Certified Data Analyst

Which keywords belong on a data analyst resume?

The words recruiters and applicant tracking systems search for.

  • SQL
  • Python
  • Tableau
  • dashboards
  • cohort analysis
  • A/B tests
  • Snowflake
  • dbt
  • reports

Use the ones that are true for you, written the way the posting writes them, and put each where it shows something you did. A list of keywords with nothing behind it helps nobody. To keep them readable by software, choose an ATS-friendly template, and read how applicant tracking systems read a resume.

How do you show impact as a data analyst?

Describe a decision. Every useful analysis ends with someone doing something differently: a price changed, a campaign stopped, stock moved. Say what the question was, what you found and what happened next.

If you cannot put a dollar figure on it, say who used the work and how often. A dashboard opened by 60 managers every week clearly mattered.

Which tools should a data analyst list?

SQL first, always. Then your analysis language, your dashboard tool and the warehouse you have worked in. Match the names in the posting: Power BI and Tableau are not interchangeable to a keyword filter.

Keep Excel on the list. Much of the business still lives in spreadsheets, and managers like to know you can meet them there.

What do technology employers look for in a resume?

  • Tie each tool to something you did with it. A skills list of twenty languages says little; a bullet that names the service you built in one of them says a lot.
  • Say what changed because of your work: a faster page, fewer incidents, a report that people now use every week.
  • Match the words in the job posting. If it says Kubernetes, write Kubernetes and not only "container orchestration", because screening software and tired recruiters both search for the exact word.

Questions about a data analyst resume

Do I need a portfolio as a data analyst?

For a first job it helps: two or three analyses with public data, each with a question, a chart and a conclusion. With experience, your work history does that job.

Should I call myself a data scientist instead?

Use the title that matches the work. If you mostly query, report and explain, analyst is accurate and respected. Inflated titles tend to fall apart in interviews.

Are online certificates worth listing?

Yes when you are starting out or changing careers. Put them under certifications with the year, and show a project where you used what you learned.

How long should a data analyst resume be?

One page.
