Mechanical Engineer Resume Example

Also called Design Engineer, Product Engineer, Manufacturing Engineer.

Engineering managers want to see what you designed, how you proved it worked and what it did for cost, weight, reliability or production. Name your tools and standards, and give your results as numbers.

What this example does well

  • The main redesign is measured in cost and weight, with proof that performance held.
  • Tools and methods are named precisely, matching the words in engineering postings.
  • Product launches show he carries designs all the way into production.

Updated

Andrew Patel

Mechanical Engineer, PE

Summary

Licensed mechanical engineer with eight years of experience designing components for automotive and industrial equipment. Led the redesign of a pump housing that cut part cost by 22% and weight by 15%, and takes designs from concept through testing and production launch.

Experience

  • Design components in SolidWorks and check them with finite element analysis before building prototypes.
  • Run design reviews and design failure mode and effects analyses with manufacturing and quality teams.
  • Launched four new products into production on schedule with suppliers in the US and Mexico.

Mechanical Engineer, Motor City Tooling

  • Designed fixtures and tooling for automotive assembly lines.
  • Reduced a line's changeover time from 45 to 18 minutes with a quick-change fixture.
  • Created detailed drawings with GD&T for machined parts.

How do you write a summary for a mechanical engineer resume?

Two to four lines at the top that say what you do, for how long, and what you are best at. Here is one for each stage of a career.

  • Entry level

Mechanical engineering graduate with a co-op at a heavy equipment manufacturer, where I redesigned a bracket that reduced weight by 18%. Skilled in SolidWorks, basic finite element analysis and hands-on prototyping, and passed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam.

  • Experienced

Mechanical engineer with five years of experience in product design. Designs parts and assemblies in CAD, runs analysis and tests, and works with manufacturing and suppliers to launch products.

  • Senior

Engineering manager and PE with fifteen years of experience. Leads a team of ten engineers, owns the product roadmap for a $150 million product line and has brought more than 20 products to market.

What are good bullet points for a mechanical engineer resume?

Each starts with a verb and says what was done. Change the details and numbers to your own; a number you cannot explain in an interview is worse than none.

  1. Designed parts and assemblies in SolidWorks from concept to production drawings.

  2. Ran finite element analysis to check strength and stiffness before prototyping.

  3. Reduced part cost by 18% through design for manufacturing changes.

  4. Built and tested prototypes and wrote test reports.

  5. Created drawings with GD&T for machined and cast parts.

  6. Led design failure mode and effects analysis with cross-functional teams.

  7. Worked with suppliers to solve quality problems and approve first articles.

  8. Handled engineering change requests and kept documentation current.

  9. Improved a production line's output by 12% with new fixtures.

  10. Mentored two junior engineers and co-op students.

Which skills should a mechanical engineer put on a resume?

Pick the ones the job posting asks for and that you can back up with an example from your work.

Hard skills

  • CAD (SolidWorks, Creo, CATIA, Inventor)
  • Finite element analysis
  • GD&T
  • Design for manufacturing and assembly
  • FMEA
  • Prototyping and testing
  • Materials selection
  • MATLAB or Python

Soft skills

  • Problem solving
  • Clear technical writing
  • Teamwork across functions
  • Attention to detail
  • Curiosity

Licenses and certifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE)
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) or Fundamentals of Engineering (FE)
  • Certified SolidWorks Professional (CSWP)
  • Lean Six Sigma Green Belt

Which keywords belong on a mechanical engineer resume?

The words recruiters and applicant tracking systems search for.

  • SolidWorks
  • finite element analysis
  • GD&T
  • prototypes
  • cost
  • design reviews
  • production
  • suppliers
  • fixtures

Use the ones that are true for you, written the way the posting writes them, and put each where it shows something you did. A list of keywords with nothing behind it helps nobody. To keep them readable by software, choose an ATS-friendly template, and read how applicant tracking systems read a resume.

How do you quantify engineering work?

Use the targets the design had to meet: cost, weight, strength, efficiency, reliability, cycle time. Give before and after, and mention how you proved it, such as by analysis or testing.

Launches are results too. Say how many products or changes you took into production and whether they were on time.

Should engineers list the PE or FE?

Yes. A PE license is a strong credential, and the FE exam shows you are on the path. List them with the state and year.

For roles that do not require a license, it still signals commitment to the profession.

What do employers in the trades look for in a resume?

  • Put licenses, tickets and safety cards near the top with their numbers or levels. Without them you cannot be sent to site.
  • Name the kind of work: residential, commercial, industrial, or the materials and processes you are qualified in.
  • Safety record and rework are the numbers that matter. Days without a lost-time incident and inspections passed first time say you can be trusted.

Which software should I list?

Your CAD and analysis tools, and any programming or data tools you use.

How technical should the resume be?

Specific enough for an engineer to understand, but clear enough for a recruiter to follow.

How long should a mechanical engineer resume be?
