What this example does well

  • Certifications are listed by code and position, which is exactly what inspectors and employers check.

How to write a resume summary, with more examples

What are good bullet points for a welder resume?

Each starts with a verb and says what was done. Change the details and numbers to your own; a number you cannot explain in an interview is worse than none.

  1. Welded structural steel to AWS D1.1 in flat, horizontal, vertical and overhead positions.

  2. Welded pipe with TIG and stick, passing X-ray inspection on over 99% of joints.

  3. Read blueprints and weld symbols and fitted parts to tight tolerances.

  4. Cut and prepared steel with plasma, oxy-fuel torch and saws.

  5. Welded stainless steel and aluminum for food processing equipment.

  6. Inspected welds visually and fixed defects before sign-off.

  7. Maintained welding machines and equipment.

  8. Followed safety rules for hot work, ventilation and protective gear.

  9. Trained new welders and apprentices.

  10. Worked in the field on repairs and installations.

Which skills should a welder put on a resume?

Pick the ones the job posting asks for and that you can back up with an example from your work.

Hard skills

  • MIG, TIG, stick and flux-cored welding
  • Pipe and plate welding
  • Blueprint and weld symbol reading
  • Fit-up and fabrication
  • Cutting (plasma, oxy-fuel)
  • Weld inspection
  • Metals (carbon steel, stainless, aluminum)
  • Welding codes (AWS, ASME, API)

Soft skills

  • Steady hands
  • Attention to detail
  • Safety focus
  • Patience
  • Reliability

Licenses and certifications

  • AWS Certified Welder
  • AWS D1.1 structural certification
  • ASME Section IX or API 1104 pipe certification
  • Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)
  • OSHA 10-Hour

Which keywords belong on a welder resume?

The words recruiters and applicant tracking systems search for.

  • TIG
  • MIG
  • stick
  • X-ray
  • structural steel
  • pipe
  • stainless
  • fit-up
  • all positions

Use the ones that are true for you, written the way the posting writes them, and put each where it shows something you did. A list of keywords with nothing behind it helps nobody. To keep them readable by software, choose an ATS-friendly template, and read how applicant tracking systems read a resume.

How should a welder list certifications?

By code, process and position, with the date: "AWS D1.1 structural, 3G and 4G, 2024" or "ASME Section IX, 6G pipe". Employers check that your certifications match the work and are current.

If your certification is tied to a previous employer's procedure, say so. You may need to re-test, and being upfront helps.

How do you show weld quality on a resume?

Use inspection results: X-ray or ultrasonic pass rates, bend test results and rework rates. A reject rate under 1% is a strong line.

Mention the materials and thicknesses you weld and any demanding environments, such as refineries or shipyards.

What do employers in the trades look for in a resume?

  • Put licenses, tickets and safety cards near the top with their numbers or levels. Without them you cannot be sent to site.
  • Name the kind of work: residential, commercial, industrial, or the materials and processes you are qualified in.
  • Safety record and rework are the numbers that matter. Days without a lost-time incident and inspections passed first time say you can be trusted.
