Java Developer Resume Example

Also called Java Engineer, Backend Developer (Java), Spring Boot Developer.

Java roles are often in large companies with large systems, and they are filtered by keyword before a person reads them. Name your Java version, Spring modules and the scale of what you ran, and show that you can work safely inside a big codebase.

Opens in the builder with this text in place, ready for you to replace with your own.

What this example does well

  • Versions and frameworks are exact, so keyword filters and engineers both find what they are looking for.
  • The migration bullet stresses what did not go wrong, which is the point in banking.
  • Older work is kept to three lines, leaving room for the current role.

How do you write a summary for a Java developer resume?

Two to four lines at the top that say what you do, for how long, and what you are best at. Here is one for each stage of a career.

  • Entry level

Java developer with a computer science degree and a year-long placement on a Spring Boot team, where I shipped 30 pull requests to a claims system. Know Java 17, JUnit, SQL and Git, and hold the Oracle Certified Associate certificate.

  • Experienced

Java developer with five years of experience in Spring Boot, Hibernate and Kafka. Builds and maintains microservices, writes thorough tests and has taken two applications through major Java version upgrades.

  • Senior

Lead Java engineer with fourteen years in financial services. Designs event-driven systems, leads a team of eight, and has delivered three large migrations from legacy platforms without customer-facing outages.

What are good bullet points for a Java developer resume?

Each starts with a verb and says what was done. Change the details and numbers to your own; a number you cannot explain in an interview is worse than none.

  1. Developed Spring Boot microservices in Java 17 handling 2 million transactions a day.

  2. Designed REST APIs documented with OpenAPI and consumed by six client teams.

  3. Used Kafka for event-driven communication between services, with exactly-once processing where money was involved.

  4. Wrote unit and integration tests with JUnit 5, Mockito and Testcontainers.

  5. Tuned SQL queries and Hibernate mappings, cutting database load by 40%.

  6. Migrated applications from an application server to containers on Kubernetes.

  7. Upgraded services from Java 8 to Java 17 and removed deprecated libraries.

  8. Profiled memory use and adjusted garbage collection settings to steady response times under load.

  9. Reviewed code for a team of seven and kept the shared style and architecture rules.

  10. Took part in on-call and wrote runbooks for the ten most common alerts.

Which skills should a Java developer put on a resume?

Pick the ones the job posting asks for and that you can back up with an example from your work.

Hard skills

  • Java (8 through 21)
  • Spring Boot, Spring Security, Spring Data
  • Hibernate and JPA
  • Microservices and REST
  • Messaging (Kafka, RabbitMQ)
  • SQL databases (Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL)
  • Testing (JUnit, Mockito, Testcontainers)
  • Build tools (Maven, Gradle)
  • Containers and Kubernetes

Soft skills

  • Careful change management
  • Reading unfamiliar code
  • Clear documentation
  • Collaboration across teams
  • Mentoring

Licenses and certifications

  • Oracle Certified Professional: Java SE Developer
  • Spring Certified Professional
  • AWS Certified Developer – Associate

Which keywords belong on a Java developer resume?

The words recruiters and applicant tracking systems search for.

  • Java 21
  • Spring Boot
  • microservices
  • Kubernetes
  • Hibernate
  • Spring Batch
  • REST
  • latency
  • JVM
  • contract tests

Use the ones that are true for you, written the way the posting writes them, and put each where it shows something you did. A list of keywords with nothing behind it helps nobody. To keep them readable by software, choose an ATS-friendly template, and read how applicant tracking systems read a resume.

Which Java technologies should you name?

The ones in the posting, by their exact names, where they are true for you: the Java version, Spring Boot and the modules you use, the ORM, the message broker, the database and the build tool. Enterprise employers often filter on these before a person reads the page.

Put them in a skills line and again in the bullets. A version number next to a migration you led is worth more than the same number in a list.

How do you write about legacy systems?

As an achievement. Keeping an old system running while moving it to something newer is hard and valuable, and many Java jobs are exactly that. Say what you moved, how long it took and what did not break.

Avoid complaining about the old technology on the page. Describe the before and the after and let the reader draw the conclusion.

What do technology employers look for in a resume?

  • Tie each tool to something you did with it. A skills list of twenty languages says little; a bullet that names the service you built in one of them says a lot.
  • Say what changed because of your work: a faster page, fewer incidents, a report that people now use every week.
  • Match the words in the job posting. If it says Kubernetes, write Kubernetes and not only "container orchestration", because screening software and tired recruiters both search for the exact word.

Questions about a Java developer resume

Is the Oracle Java certification worth listing?

Yes if you have it, especially for consultancies and large enterprises that like formal proof. Experience still counts for more.

Should I mention the industry I worked in?

Yes. Banking, insurance, telecoms and healthcare each have rules and habits that carry over, and employers in the same industry value that.

How far back should a Java developer resume go?

About ten to fifteen years. Earlier roles can be a single line each unless they are directly relevant.

Which template should a Java developer use?

A one-column, text-first template. Large employers nearly always use applicant tracking systems. This example uses Register.
