Hard skills

What the work takes, how a hiring manager judges each skill, and a bullet point that shows it.

  1. Python

Show depth: the versions you use, performance work, packaging or the parts of the language you rely on.

Example bullet pointUpgraded services from Python 3.8 to 3.12 and used the speed gains to retire two servers.

  2. Web frameworks (Django, FastAPI, Flask)

Name the framework and what the application does, with its users or traffic.

Example bullet pointBuilt an internal booking tool in Flask that 150 field staff use to schedule site visits.

  3. SQL and PostgreSQL

Show that you can write and tune queries yourself, not only use an ORM.

Example bullet pointReplaced ORM-generated queries on the reports page with tuned SQL, cutting load time from 9 seconds to under 1.

  4. Data libraries (pandas, NumPy)

Show the data work: its size, the cleaning and what the results fed into.

Example bullet pointCleaned and merged 12 supplier price files with pandas into one checked feed for the pricing team.

  5. Workflow tools (Airflow, Celery)

Name the tool and how you made jobs reliable: retries, alerts and recovery.

Example bullet pointAdded retries, timeouts and failure alerts to 40 Airflow tasks, ending the need for manual reruns.

  6. Testing with pytest

Show how your tests made change safer, with fixtures, mocks or the coverage you raised.

Example bullet pointBuilt pytest fixtures for a fake payment gateway, so billing code could be tested without network calls.

  7. Type hints and static analysis

Mention the tools, such as mypy or Ruff, and how you brought them into the team.

Example bullet pointIntroduced Ruff and strict mypy checks on new modules, catching type errors before code review.

  8. Docker and cloud deployment

Say what you package and where it runs.

Example bullet pointPackaged four Python services as slim Docker images and deployed them to AWS ECS through GitHub Actions.

  9. REST API design

Show clear contracts: validation, errors, versioning and documentation.

Example bullet pointDesigned a REST API with Pydantic validation and OpenAPI documentation, used by two mobile apps.

Soft skills

Shown through what you did, never claimed as adjectives.

  1. Readable code

Show that others could work with your code: reviews, onboarding or fewer bugs.

Example bullet pointRefactored a 2,000-line script into tested modules that new team members could change safely.

  2. Documentation

Mention documents people used, such as a setup guide or an API reference.

Example bullet pointWrote a one-page setup guide that brought a new developer's first working build down to an hour.

  3. Working with analysts and product people

Show how you turned their needs into tools or data they rely on.

Example bullet pointBuilt a self-serve export tool after sitting with analysts to learn which data they pulled by hand.

  4. Debugging patiently

Describe a hard bug you traced and fixed.

Example bullet pointTraced an intermittent data mismatch to a time zone bug in an open-source library and fixed it upstream.

  5. Code review

Show that your reviews improved quality or helped others learn.

Example bullet pointReviewed pull requests for a team of five within a day, with comments that pointed to examples and docs.

Licenses and certifications

Give them a section of their own, with who issued each one and the year or expiry date.

  • AWS Certified Developer – Associate
  • PCAP – Certified Associate Python Programmer

Each posting has its own words. Our guide to tailoring your resume to a job description shows how to find them and where to put them.

Where to put your skills

  • In a skills section: a short list of the hard skills the posting names, in its words.
  • In your bullet points: every skill that matters should show up in something you did, with a result. That is where a hiring manager believes it.
  • In your summary: two or three of the skills the job asks for most.

Questions

What skills should a Python developer put on a resume?

Python itself, the web framework you use, SQL, data libraries if the job involves data, workflow tools, pytest, type checking, Docker and API design, plus readable code and documentation.

Should I list Python libraries separately?

Group them in your skills section by purpose, such as web, data and testing, and mention the important ones again in the bullet point where you used them.

How do I show Python skills without professional experience?

Link to projects with clean code and tests, and describe them like work: what the project does, who uses it and what you learned.

Put them to work

Start from a Python developer resume that already uses these skills, for an invented person, and make it yours in the builder.
