Software Engineer Skills for a Resume
Engineering teams hire people who build reliable systems and make the team around them better. Name the languages, platforms and practices the posting lists, then show each one in a bullet point with numbers for scale, speed or reliability.

Hard skills
What the work takes, how a hiring manager judges each skill, and a bullet point that shows it.
Programming languages (Python, Go, Java, TypeScript)
List the languages you use at work, strongest first, and show each in something you built. A long list of languages you touched once weakens the rest.
Example bullet pointRewrote a slow Python image service in Go, cutting memory use by 60% on the same traffic.
API design (REST, gRPC, GraphQL)
Show design decisions, not just endpoints: versioning, pagination, error formats and who uses the API.
Example bullet pointDesigned a versioned gRPC pricing API used by four teams, with only backward-compatible changes for two years.
Relational and NoSQL databases
Name the databases and the hard problems you solved in them: schema changes, indexing, scaling or consistency.
Example bullet pointMoved session data from PostgreSQL to Redis, taking 40% of the read load off the primary database.
Cloud platforms (AWS, Google Cloud, Azure)
Name the services you actually use, such as Lambda, S3 or Cloud Run, and what you built with them.
Example bullet pointBuilt a file-processing service on AWS Lambda and S3 that handles 300,000 uploads a day with no servers to manage.
Containers and Kubernetes
Say whether you write the manifests, run the clusters or deploy to them. Interviewers will ask.
Example bullet pointWrote Helm charts and autoscaling rules for five services, keeping latency steady through holiday peaks.
Automated testing
Show what your tests made possible: fewer regressions, faster releases or a safer migration.
Example bullet pointAdded contract tests between the checkout and payment services, catching breaking changes before deployment.
CI/CD pipelines
Mention the tools and the before and after: build time, deploy frequency or failed releases.
Example bullet pointCut the CI pipeline from 25 to 8 minutes by caching dependencies and running test suites in parallel.
System design
Senior roles look for this. Describe a system you designed, its constraints and the trade-off you chose.
Example bullet pointDesigned a rate limiter shared by 30 services, choosing a token bucket in Redis over per-instance limits after load tests.
Monitoring and incident response
Show both sides: the dashboards and alerts you built, and how you handled an incident.
Example bullet pointLed the response to a payment outage, restoring service in 35 minutes and writing the review that changed our retry policy.
Soft skills
Shown through what you did, never claimed as adjectives.
Clear written communication
Design documents, pull request descriptions and incident reviews are the evidence. Mention one people used.
Example bullet pointWrote the design document for a new search service that the team used to plan two quarters of work.
Code review that teaches
Show that your reviews raise quality and help others grow, not just that you approve pull requests.
Example bullet pointTurned recurring review comments into a short guide and linter rules, so reviews could focus on design.
Breaking down vague problems
Describe a fuzzy request you turned into a plan the team could deliver.
Example bullet pointTurned a request to make the app faster into five measured fixes, starting with the slowest page.
Ownership
Show that you see work through to the result, including the unglamorous parts after launch.
Example bullet pointOwned the notification service from design to on-call, including its dashboards and runbook.
Mentoring
Name who you mentored and what they achieved, or a practice you started.
Example bullet pointRan a weekly session on debugging production issues for engineers in their first year.
Licenses and certifications
Give them a section of their own, with who issued each one and the year or expiry date.
- AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate
- AWS Certified Developer – Associate
- Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD)

Each posting has its own words. Our guide to tailoring your resume to a job description shows how to find them and where to put them.
Where to put your skills
- In a skills section: a short list of the hard skills the posting names, in its words.
- In your bullet points: every skill that matters should show up in something you did, with a result. That is where a hiring manager believes it.
- In your summary: two or three of the skills the job asks for most.

Questions
What skills should a software engineer put on a resume?
The languages, frameworks, databases and cloud services the job uses, testing and CI/CD, and system design for senior roles. Back each one with a bullet point that shows scale or impact, and let soft skills such as clear writing and ownership show through your results.
Should I list every programming language I know?
No. List the ones you could use at work tomorrow, strongest first. Interviewers may ask about anything on the page.
Do I need a separate skills section?
A short one helps recruiters and tracking systems scan quickly. Group it by type, such as languages, cloud and tools, and keep it consistent with your bullet points.
Put them to work
Start from a software engineer resume that already uses these skills, for an invented person, and make it yours in the builder.
