Certified Nursing Assistant Resume Example

Also called CNA, Nurse Aide, Patient Care Assistant.

Facilities hire nursing assistants for reliability and kindness, and they check certification first. A good CNA resume shows an active listing on the state registry, how many residents or patients you cared for, and that nurses could count on what you reported.

What this example does well

  • The registry listing is stated with the word "active", which is the first thing a director of nursing checks.
  • Attendance is mentioned in the summary. For this role, showing up is a selling point worth a line.
  • The skin-redness bullet shows observation and reporting, the part of the job nurses rely on most.

How do you write a summary for a certified nursing assistant resume?

Two to four lines at the top that say what you do, for how long, and what you are best at. Here is one for each stage of a career.

  • Entry level

Newly certified nursing assistant who completed a 120-hour state-approved program with 40 clinical hours in a skilled nursing facility. Practiced bathing, feeding, transfers and vital signs under a nurse's supervision. Listed on the state nurse aide registry and available for any shift.

  • Experienced

Certified nursing assistant with four years in long-term care. Cares for ten to twelve residents a shift, charts accurately and reports changes quickly. Experienced with dementia care and mechanical lifts.

  • Senior

Senior nursing assistant with ten years across skilled nursing, rehabilitation and hospital units. Trains new aides, leads the restorative care program for 20 residents and is the person nurses ask for on difficult shifts.

What are good bullet points for a certified nursing assistant resume?

Each starts with a verb and says what was done. Change the details and numbers to your own; a number you cannot explain in an interview is worse than none.

  1. Helped eleven residents each shift with bathing, grooming, dressing and meals while protecting their privacy and choices.

  2. Measured and charted temperature, pulse, breathing rate, blood pressure and weight.

  3. Repositioned residents who could not move themselves every two hours to protect their skin.

  4. Moved residents between bed, chair and toilet using gait belts and mechanical lifts, with no injuries.

  5. Reported changes in appetite, mood, skin or breathing to the nurse straight away.

  6. Answered call lights promptly across a 15-room hallway.

  7. Supported residents living with dementia using calm redirection rather than restraint.

  8. Recorded food and fluid intake and helped with feeding for residents at risk of choking.

  9. Kept rooms and equipment clean and followed isolation precautions during outbreaks.

  10. Oriented six new nursing assistants to the unit routine.

Which skills should a certified nursing assistant put on a resume?

Pick the ones the job posting asks for and that you can back up with an example from your work.

Hard skills

  • Activities of daily living (ADLs)
  • Vital signs
  • Transfers, gait belts and mechanical lifts
  • Repositioning and skin checks
  • Feeding assistance
  • Intake and output recording
  • Infection control and isolation precautions
  • Electronic charting

Soft skills

  • Patience
  • Reliability
  • Observation
  • Respect for dignity
  • Physical stamina

Licenses and certifications

  • Certified Nursing Assistant (state nurse aide registry)
  • CPR and First Aid
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Medication aide certificate, where the state offers one

Which keywords belong on a certified nursing assistant resume?

The words recruiters and applicant tracking systems search for.

  • residents
  • vital signs
  • long-term care
  • skilled nursing
  • transfers
  • mechanical lifts
  • dementia
  • call lights
  • Nurse Aide Registry

Use the ones that are true for you, written the way the posting writes them, and put each where it shows something you did. A list of keywords with nothing behind it helps nobody. To keep them readable by software, choose an ATS-friendly template, and read how applicant tracking systems read a resume.

What should a CNA put at the top of a resume?

Your certification and where it is registered. Each state keeps its own nurse aide registry, and an employer has to confirm you are on it and in good standing before you can work. Writing "active" next to the listing saves them a step.

Follow that with the settings you know: long-term care, rehabilitation, hospital, home health. The routine is different in each, and managers look for someone who already knows theirs.

How do you show results in a job that is about care, not numbers?

Use the numbers that already exist in your day: residents per shift, beds on the unit, how fast call lights were answered, how long you went without a missed shift or an injury.

Then add one or two moments where you noticed something and told the nurse. Catching a change early is the most valuable thing an aide does, and a specific example is more convincing than the word "observant".

What do healthcare employers look for in a resume?

  • Put your license or registration where it cannot be missed: next to your name or at the top of a certifications section, with the state or country that issued it.
  • Name the setting and its size. A 28-bed surgical unit, a four-dentist practice and a home-care round of nine clients tell a recruiter far more than the job title does.
  • Show safety and accuracy with numbers you can stand behind: patients per shift, audit results, falls, waiting times. Leave out anything that could identify a patient.

Questions about a certified nursing assistant resume

Can I write a CNA resume with no experience?

Yes. Lead with your training program, its hours and your clinical placement, then list the skills you were checked off on. Add any caring you have done for family, in a church or as a volunteer.

Should I list CPR on a CNA resume?

Yes, with who issued it and the year. Most facilities require it, and a current card means one less thing to arrange before your first shift.

How long should a CNA resume be?

One page. Two jobs with three or four bullets each, your training and your certifications are enough.

Is a CNA resume different from a patient care technician resume?

The core is the same. A patient care technician resume usually adds hospital skills such as drawing blood, running EKGs and checking blood sugar, so list those clearly if you have them.
