Medical Assistant Resume Example

Also called Certified Medical Assistant, CMA, Clinical Medical Assistant.

Medical assistants work both sides of a practice, the exam room and the front desk. Clinics want to see which clinical tasks you can do without supervision, which records system you know, and how many patients a day you kept moving.

What this example does well

  • The summary gives daily patient volume and the number of providers, which is how a practice manager sizes up a candidate.
  • Clinical and administrative work both appear, because most clinics want one person who can do both.
  • Being bilingual is stated in the summary and backed by a bullet that shows it being used.

How do you write a summary for a medical assistant resume?

Two to four lines at the top that say what you do, for how long, and what you are best at. Here is one for each stage of a career.

  • Entry level

Medical assisting graduate with a 200-hour externship in a busy pediatric practice, where I roomed patients, took vital signs and gave vaccines under supervision. Passed the CMA (AAMA) exam in 2026. Quick to learn a new records system and steady with nervous patients.

  • Experienced

Certified medical assistant with five years in family medicine. Rooms up to 30 patients a day, draws blood, gives injections and keeps referrals and authorizations moving. Works in Epic and athenaOne.

  • Senior

Lead medical assistant with nine years in primary and specialty care. Supervises a team of six, builds the daily schedule for five providers, trains new staff on clinical skills and keeps the practice ready for audits.

How to write a resume summary, with more examples

What are good bullet points for a medical assistant resume?

Each starts with a verb and says what was done. Change the details and numbers to your own; a number you cannot explain in an interview is worse than none.

  1. Roomed 28 patients a day, recording vital signs, allergies, medications and the reason for the visit.

  2. Drew blood by venipuncture and finger stick and prepared samples for the lab.

  3. Gave intramuscular and subcutaneous injections, including childhood and adult vaccines.

  4. Ran 12-lead EKGs and passed the tracings to the provider.

  5. Set up and assisted with minor procedures such as suturing, biopsies and joint injections.

  6. Called patients with normal results and booked follow-up visits as the provider instructed.

  7. Completed prior authorizations for imaging and medications and tracked each one to a decision.

  8. Sterilized instruments and kept exam rooms stocked and clean between patients.

  9. Answered a four-line phone, scheduled appointments and checked insurance eligibility.

  10. Trained three new medical assistants on rooming standards and the records system.

Which skills should a medical assistant put on a resume?

Pick the ones the job posting asks for and that you can back up with an example from your work.

Hard skills

  • Rooming patients and vital signs
  • Phlebotomy
  • Injections and immunizations
  • EKG
  • Point-of-care testing (strep, flu, glucose, urinalysis)
  • Electronic health records
  • Prior authorizations and referrals
  • Scheduling and insurance verification
  • Sterilization and infection control

Soft skills

  • Putting patients at ease
  • Multitasking
  • Attention to detail
  • Discretion
  • Teamwork

Licenses and certifications

  • Certified Medical Assistant, CMA (AAMA)
  • Registered Medical Assistant, RMA (AMT)
  • Certified Clinical Medical Assistant, CCMA (NHA)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)

Which keywords belong on a medical assistant resume?

The words recruiters and applicant tracking systems search for.

  • patients a day
  • vital signs
  • injections
  • EKG
  • prior authorizations
  • Epic
  • athenaOne
  • urgent care
  • family medicine
  • vaccines

Use the ones that are true for you, written the way the posting writes them, and put each where it shows something you did. A list of keywords with nothing behind it helps nobody. To keep them readable by software, choose an ATS-friendly template, and read how applicant tracking systems read a resume.

Should a medical assistant resume focus on clinical or administrative skills?

Read the posting and lead with whichever it asks for first. A back-office role in a specialty clinic wants phlebotomy, injections and procedure setup at the top. A front-office role wants scheduling, insurance checks and phones.

If the posting asks for both, split your skills into two short groups under one heading. It shows at a glance that you can cover either side when someone is out.

Which medical assistant certification should you list?

List the one you hold, with its full name and the body that issued it: CMA from the American Association of Medical Assistants, RMA from American Medical Technologists, or CCMA from the National Healthcareer Association. Employers treat them as comparable, but their software may search for one set of letters, so write both the letters and the name.

If you are scheduled to take the exam, say so with the month. "CMA (AAMA) exam scheduled for November 2026" is honest and still gets you considered.

What do healthcare employers look for in a resume?

  • Put your license or registration where it cannot be missed: next to your name or at the top of a certifications section, with the state or country that issued it.
  • Name the setting and its size. A 28-bed surgical unit, a four-dentist practice and a home-care round of nine clients tell a recruiter far more than the job title does.
  • Show safety and accuracy with numbers you can stand behind: patients per shift, audit results, falls, waiting times. Leave out anything that could identify a patient.

Questions about a medical assistant resume

What goes on a medical assistant resume with no experience?

Your externship. Treat it like a job: the clinic, the dates, the hours and the tasks you did there. Then list the clinical skills you were assessed on in your program.

Should I name the records systems I have used?

Yes. Epic, athenaOne, eClinicalWorks and NextGen are searched for by name, and knowing the clinic's system means less training.

How long should a medical assistant resume be?

One page. Recruiters for clinics usually fill several openings at once and read quickly.

Is being bilingual worth mentioning?

Very much. Put it in your summary and in a languages section with an honest level. Many clinics serve patients who are more comfortable in another language.
