Tutor Resume Example

Also called Private Tutor, Academic Tutor, Test Prep Tutor.

Parents and tutoring companies choose tutors whose students improve. A tutoring resume should name your subjects and levels, how many students you have taught, and the grades or scores they reached.

Opens in the builder with this text in place, ready for you to replace with your own.

What this example does well

  • Subjects and levels are in the headline and the first bullet, where a parent looks first.
  • Score gains are averaged across students, which is more honest than quoting the best case.
  • Referrals are mentioned as the source of new students, a quiet sign of quality.

How do you write a summary for a tutor resume?

Two to four lines at the top that say what you do, for how long, and what you are best at. Here is one for each stage of a career.

  • Entry level

College junior majoring in chemistry, offering tutoring in high school science and math. Tutored classmates for two years through the campus learning center, about eight hours a week, and earned an A in every course I tutor. Patient and good at finding where the confusion starts.

  • Experienced

Tutor with four years of experience teaching math and science to middle and high school students. Works one-on-one and in small groups, in person and online, and keeps parents informed after every session.

  • Senior

Tutor and learning center director with twelve years of experience. Has taught more than 600 students, trains a team of 15 tutors and designed the test preparation course whose students gain an average of 110 SAT points.

How to write a resume summary, with more examples

What are good bullet points for a tutor resume?

Each starts with a verb and says what was done. Change the details and numbers to your own; a number you cannot explain in an interview is worse than none.

  1. Tutored 20 students a week in algebra, geometry and precalculus.

  2. Raised students' SAT math scores by an average of 85 points over ten sessions.

  3. Started each new student with a diagnostic to find the gaps behind their current struggles.

  4. Helped students move up by one to two letter grades within a semester.

  5. Taught online with a shared whiteboard and recorded sessions for review.

  6. Prepared students for AP exams; 80% scored 4 or 5.

  7. Wrote session notes for parents with progress and practice for the week.

  8. Taught study skills and test strategies alongside the subject.

  9. Worked with a student's classroom teacher to match the school's pace.

  10. Supported students with ADHD and dyslexia using shorter tasks and frequent checks.

Which skills should a tutor put on a resume?

Pick the ones the job posting asks for and that you can back up with an example from your work.

Hard skills

  • Subject knowledge at the levels taught
  • Test preparation (SAT, ACT, AP, GRE)
  • Diagnostic assessment
  • Lesson planning for individuals
  • Online teaching tools
  • Progress tracking and reporting
  • Study and organization skills coaching

Soft skills

  • Patience
  • Clear explanation
  • Encouragement
  • Adapting to each student
  • Reliability

Licenses and certifications

  • Teaching license, if held
  • CRLA tutor certification
  • Background check clearance

Which keywords belong on a tutor resume?

The words recruiters and applicant tracking systems search for.

  • students
  • SAT
  • algebra
  • calculus
  • sessions
  • online
  • one-on-one
  • score
  • parents

Use the ones that are true for you, written the way the posting writes them, and put each where it shows something you did. A list of keywords with nothing behind it helps nobody. To keep them readable by software, choose an ATS-friendly template, and read how applicant tracking systems read a resume.

How do you prove results as a tutor?

Track them. Record each student's grade or test score when you start and when you finish, and report the average change. An average across all students is more believable than one spectacular case.

Retention and referrals count too. Families who stay for years and send their friends are telling you, and your next client, that it works.

How do you list self-employed tutoring?

As a job. Title: "Private tutor". Employer: "Self-employed". Then dates, subjects, number of students and results. There is no need to name families.

If you also work through a platform or a center, list that separately with its name, since the company can confirm it.

What do schools look for in a resume?

  • Lead with what you are certified to teach and for which ages, because a school has to check that before anything else.
  • Describe results for learners, not only duties: reading levels, exam pass rates, attendance, or how many pupils you supported one to one.
  • Academic posts ask for a CV, not a resume. It is longer and lists publications, teaching, grants and talks in full.

Questions about a tutor resume

Do I need a teaching degree to be a tutor?

No. Strong knowledge of the subject and evidence that your students improve matter most. List your own grades or scores in the subjects you teach if they are strong.

Should I include my own test scores?

For test preparation, yes. A high SAT, ACT or GRE score is a qualification that parents and companies look for.

Is volunteer tutoring worth listing?

Yes, with hours and the number of students. It is teaching experience regardless of pay.

How long should a tutor resume be?
